Seen this? Excalibur recently ran the article: “Union members covertly construct anti-strike website”. And here is the anti-strike site, JustSayNoToStrike, where the amusing above video originates.
Naturally, after what happened last time, many in the YorkU community are concerned. No doubt students are particularly worried. Which is probably why I received the following message a couple days ago: “CUPE Doll, where are you? CUPE 3903 is on the verge of going on another strike! We neeeeeed youuuuuuu.”
Maybe. But I don’t think so. Should there be a strike, I’ll contribute information as I may to help. And I’ll be the first to admit if I’m wrong.. but I just don’t believe there will be a strike this time around.
Why not? Why don’t I believe there will be? Well, not on any solid evidence. Several clues, however, taken together, simply don’t add up to a strike.
- The timing sucks for us. What are we going to do — shut down a few summer courses? They’ll just get rescheduled.
- Summertime, when the living is easy and 3903s love traveling to exotic locales — there wouldn’t even be enough pickets to shut down those few summer courses.
- There have been no internal communications or organization to suggest we are gearing up preparing to strike. There’s no mobilization. The silence isn’t total, it’s not like you can hear pins dropping — but hardly anyone’s shouting propaganda and marching orders at the general membership.
- The administration and several departments appear not to be taking some elementary precautions. And while I can’t disclose details, my impression now is there’s a no-strike expectation in higher YorkU echelons.
Just clues. All pointing away from a strike looming. And the funny, sad thing is, we have some real serious strike issues now. Not the spurious ones we advertise. But Unit 2 is getting decimated from both inside and outside 3903. Like a conspiracy, except it’s no secret from anyone caring to look with their eyes open. In a few short years, Local 3903 will cease to exist as a vital or even viable collective.
I’ll be the first to admit if I’m wrong, but it seems to me our 3903 glory days of infamy are in the past.

The Ultimate Culture Clash totally had to switch web hosts. Just because we kept getting
Nice try. Really. Great effort to revise the memory of Ronald Reagan. To get people believing
It really is ridiculous. The divisive, ideological rage. Last week, I thought it was too much and potentially hazardous to everything democratic. That’s why I posted it’s
It used to be surreal. News concerning dire existential conflicts in the Middle East – beneath headlines advertising humiliation. Fortunately, it didn’t last. Not after someone somewhere reminded that Islamist societies were bound to experience humiliation each day Israel kept surviving. And that after 60 years failing to destroy Israel? Humiliation could become unbearable.
